Composite Restoration/Filling Post Op Instructions

Numbness

  • Your mouth may remain numb for several hours.

  • Avoid chewing until the numbness has completely worn off to prevent biting your cheek, lip, or tongue.

Eating & Drinking

  • Once numbness has resolved, you may eat normally.

  • Avoid very hard foods (ice, hard candy) for the rest of the day.

  • For front teeth restorations, avoid foods and drinks that stain for 24–48 hours, such as:

    • Coffee, tea, red wine

    • Dark sodas

    • Berries, tomato sauce, curry

    • Tobacco products

Sensitivity

  • Mild sensitivity to hot, cold, or pressure is normal and may last a few days to a couple of weeks.

  • Use toothpaste for sensitive teeth if needed. 

  • Avoid extreme temperatures if sensitivity occurs.

Bite Awareness

  • Your bite should feel comfortable.

  • If your tooth feels high, uncomfortable, or painful when biting, contact the office promptly for a bite adjustment.

Oral Hygiene

  • Brush and floss normally.

  • Maintain good oral hygiene to protect the restoration and surrounding tooth structure.

 

Pain Management

  • Mild soreness or discomfort is normal.

  • Over-the-counter pain relievers (such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen) may be taken as directed unless contraindicated.

Longevity & Care

  • Composite restorations are strong but not indestructible.

  • Avoid chewing on ice, pens, or fingernails.

  • Report any roughness, chipping, or sharp edges.

When to Call the Office

  • Persistent sensitivity or pain lasting longer than 1–2 weeks

  • Pain when biting

  • Restoration feels rough, chipped, or falls out

  • Swelling or signs of infection
