Root Canal Post Op Instructions
Root Canal Treatment
POST-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS
You have just had a root canal procedure completed. Some tenderness or discomfort is normal as the area heals.
What to Expect
- Mild to moderate soreness when biting or chewing for a few days
- Sensitivity around the treated tooth
- Slight swelling or inflammation of the surrounding tissue
These symptoms should gradually improve.
Pain Management
- Take over-the-counter pain medication as needed, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, unless otherwise directed.
- If prescription medication or antibiotics were provided, take them exactly as prescribed and complete the full course.
- Avoid aspirin directly on the gums or tooth.
Eating and Drinking
- Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until it has been permanently restored (crown or filling).
- Eat soft foods for the first 24–48 hours.
- Avoid very hot, cold, hard, or sticky foods.
- Do not eat until numbness has completely worn off to prevent biting your cheek or tongue.
Oral Hygiene
- Continue brushing and flossing as normal, but be gentle around the treated area.
- Rinse gently with warm salt water (½ teaspoon salt in a glass of warm water) if soreness occurs.
Temporary Filling or Crown (If Applicable)
- A temporary filling or crown is not as strong as a permanent one.
- Avoid chewing gum, sticky candy, or hard foods on that side.
- If the temporary material comes out or breaks, contact the office promptly.
Activity
- Avoid strenuous activity for the remainder of the day.
- Normal activities may be resumed the following day unless advised otherwise.

Follow-Up Care
- It is important to return for your permanent restoration (crown or filling) as recommended. This protects the tooth and ensures long-term success of the root canal.
