Scaling & Root Planing
Scaling and root planing is a non-surgical treatment of periodontal disease. The purpose of the treatment is to remove bacterial plaque and tartar from around teeth and under the gumline.
When to call the office
If you have persistent discomfort or major swelling that occurs after scaling and root planing, contact the office for instructions as soon as possible: (267) 961-5884.
Strictly avoid✕ No smoking for 24–48 hours
Eating & Drinking
- Avoid eating until the dental anesthetic has worn off completely.
- Avoid very hot beverages.
- For the next few days, avoid certain foods with seeds, chips, or popcorn.
Comfort & Healing
- It is completely normal to experience some sensitivity, swelling, and bleeding in the area treated. This sensitivity should gradually go away in several days.
- To help soothe the area, rinse your mouth 2–3 times a day with warm salt water (1 tsp salt per 8 oz warm water) for 3–5 days.
- Take ibuprofen (Advil) or Tylenol for any discomfort.
- Refrain from smoking for 24 to 48 hours after scaling and root planing. Tobacco will delay the healing of the tissues.
Home Care
- It is imperative that you floss and/or Waterpik once daily and brush twice daily for at least two minutes.
- This helps to remove plaque and debris from between your teeth, and is crucial in fighting periodontal disease.
Follow-Up
- It is vital to visit our office at least every 3 months for follow-up periodontal appointments.
