Zoom! Whitening

Congratulations on your brighter smile! Your teeth are more porous immediately after whitening, which makes them more prone to staining for the first 48 hours. Following the “White Diet” below will help you get the most out of your results.

The First 48 Hours — The White Diet

  • Avoid anything that could stain a white t-shirt.
  • Avoid dark or staining beverages:
    • Coffee, tea, and dark sodas
    • Red wine and dark liquors
    • Fruit juices (cranberry, grape, etc.)
  • Avoid dark or staining foods:
    • Tomato-based sauces, ketchup, and soy sauce
    • Berries, beets, and dark fruits
    • Chocolate and dark candy
    • Mustard and other dark condiments
  • Avoid tobacco products of any kind.
  • Stick to light-colored foods such as chicken, rice, pasta with light sauce, bananas, potatoes, and dairy.
  • If you can’t avoid a staining food or drink, try to minimize contact with your front teeth (use a straw for dark beverages placed toward the back of the mouth).

Sensitivity

  • Tooth or gum sensitivity for 24–48 hours after treatment is normal and expected.
  • Take ibuprofen or acetaminophen as needed for discomfort.
  • Use a sensitivity toothpaste (such as Sensodyne) for a few days before and after treatment if you are prone to sensitivity.
  • Avoid extremely hot or cold foods and drinks until sensitivity resolves.

Oral Hygiene

  • Brush and floss normally, but be gentle if your gums feel tender.
  • Rinse with water after any food or drink to help protect your results during the first 48 hours.

Maintaining Your Results

  • Results can last a year or longer depending on your diet and habits.
  • Continue to limit staining foods, drinks, and tobacco long-term to preserve your bright smile.
  • Take-home touch-up trays or whitening pens, if provided, can help maintain results between visits.
  • Routine cleanings every 6 months help keep your whitening results looking their best.
